If you are planning a trip to Africa, you need to know what the Big Five are. I didn’t know until I came here. The 5 animals coined in the phrase “The Big Five” are considered, unfortunately, difficult and/or dangerous to hunt. But for the purpose of this blog, let’s change the term “hunt” to “view” and talk about the Big Five in relation to safari. Because that’s what we should be doing when we come to Africa – viewing the animals, not killing them! OK I am off my soap box (for now)…
The Big Five:
- Black/White Rhino
- Cape Water Buffalo
These are the 5 majestic animals you should try to make a point to see on any safari. Definitely bring binoculars and a camera with a good zoom when going on any safari!
**Note: there are no rhinos of any kind in Botswana. Sadly, they have all been poached out. So if your heart is set on seeing a rhino, then Kruger National Park or Pilanesberg National Park in South Africa are your best bets.
In 2013 the Black Rhinos were listed as critically endangered in conservation status. If you feel so inclined, please donate to an animal conservation fund you find valuable and let’s help save these animals for our children to enjoy and learn about.
